Does New York require a registered agent?
No. In New York the Secretary of State is automatically the agent for service of process for every LLC and corporation. Appointing a private registered agent is optional.

The statute
Where the rule comes from
Section 301 of the Limited Liability Company Law designates the Secretary of State as agent for service of process on every New York LLC. It is automatic and it is free. The Business Corporation Law does the same for corporations.
Section 302 is the optional part. It lets an LLC name a registered agent in addition to the Secretary of State.
Read those two together and the picture is clear. New York never leaves a company without an agent, so it never had to make private agents compulsory. Most states did it the other way around, which is why almost every registered agent site you will read says the service is required. In New York that sentence is wrong.
What free looks like
How service works with no private agent
A plaintiff serves the Department of State. The state mails the papers to the address on your Articles of Organization. Your response deadline starts from the service on the state, not from your delivery.
That last sentence is the whole problem, and it is worth reading twice.
The clock is already running while the envelope is in transit. If the address on your filing is stale, or the mail sits in a lobby for a week, you burn part of your response window without knowing a case exists.
Miss it entirely and you can lose by default. The court does not reopen a judgment because the post was slow.

Nothing in that table says you must spend money. Plenty of New York businesses run on row one for years without an incident.
Self-service
Can I be my own registered agent?
Yes. Any adult with a physical New York street address who is present during business hours can serve as their own agent, including the owner of the business.
Two costs come with it, and neither shows up on an invoice.
The address goes public. If you work from home, your home address is now searchable by every customer, competitor, and unhappy counterparty you will ever have.
And you have to be there. A process server does not schedule. They come during business hours, and if the business is a home, the person answering the door might be your kid.
That second one is the reason most people who start as their own agent stop being their own agent.

When paying is worth it
Skip it if you have a real commercial office, reliable reception, and no problem with that address being public. You are already covered.
Pay for it if the filing address is your home, if you move often, if you travel, or if the company has more than one owner and none of them wants to be the person who missed the envelope.
